Im visiting NOLA is spring and rented a condo in “faubourg” Marigny. I dont know anyone that lives in the south nor have i ever been to NOLA so i wanted to know if it is a “Decent Neighborhood”, is it walking distance to a lot of things, should i not walk at night.. am i better off getting a hotel room in the FQ? any suggestions would be great!
The Faubourg Marigny is a medium sized neighborhood that was “gentrifying” before Katrina and has improved a LOT since the storm. Most of the neighborhood didn’t flood. It was the first “suburb” of the original city (the French Quarter) and was built on high ground.
If the condo is in the area known as the Marigny Triangle, it is very close to the FQ and has very similar architecture. Frenchmen Street (runs through the Triangle) has become an entertainment & nightlife extension of the FQ. You can walk around at night, lots to do is close by, etc.
If you look on a map, the Triangle is bounded by Esplanade Avenue, Saint Claude Avenue, and Elysian Fields Avenue. The border between the MT and the FQ is Esplanade.
If the condo is not in the Triangle you need to find out exactly where it is located. As mentioned before, the Faubourg Marigny has greatly improved and it should be safe to walk around at night. However, it is also a residential neighborhood and there won’t be much within walking distance.
Hope you have a great time!
