Saturday is NOLA Running of the Bulls, a popular Warehouse District race, usually held in July. This event was rescheduled this year after Tropical Storm Barry’s impending visit to our Louisiana coast on said scheduled weekend.

NOLA Bulls website shared this announcement about postponing their race: “We come to you with heavy horns. This weekend’s weather emergency forecast forced us to postpone San Fermin in Nueva Orleans. Our team made this tough decision in collaboration with venue management, EMS, and NOPD. We understand that this may be inconvenient, but safety is our first priority. Besides, as you all know, RollerBulls can’t skate flooded streets.”

Aug. 23-25, 2019 are new dates for the race and related events and the organization will honor already purchased tickets for these dates.

This is a fun-filled New Orleans version of El Encierro that takes place in Pamplona, Spain. Scores of white-clad runners are chased and accosted by, RollerBulls, members of women’s roller derby teams. Armed with plastic or padded bats and horns on their helmets these Roller Derby “Bulls” mean business.

Doors of the Sugar Mill open at 6:30 a.m. and Running begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. While the event is open to the public, El Encierro asks that participants make sure to register. Ticketed guests can enjoy food trucks, beers, sangria and live music.

On Sunday, August 25th the weekend officially ends with the singing of Pobré de Mi (Poor Me) at Lula Distillery. Beginning at 10 a.m., the day will feature a recovery brunch, Ernest Hemingway-inspired burlesque performance, cocktails and more.

It is not all fun and games for this group. Portions of the festival proceeds are earmarked for charitable donations as evidenced by this statement on their website: “Nola Bulls, LLC strives to improve New Orleans through our festivals but that doesn’t mean only through throwing kickass parties. We also donate portions of our proceeds to charity.  Our two favorites right now are below!”

In 2014 Nola Bulls cofounder Beth Hanning was diagnosed with Stage IIB (2B) Breast Cancer. Following treatment and surgery Beth’s Friends Forever (BFF NOLA, Inc) was formed to raise money to supplement the resources of financially needy women fighting cancer in the Greater New Orleans area. Visit their website for more information. Since 2016 we have helped BFF raise over $40,000 to support this great cause.

Big Easy Animal Rescue is a non-profit animal rescue team here in New Orleans. Big Easy Animal Rescue Inc is a non-profit all volunteer group who assist, rescue, foster, provide medical care and love for neglected and abused animals.

There are a couple of things to make note of.  NO OUTSIDE DRINKS are allowed into the venue. No ice chests, chairs or music making machines. There will be limited seating inside the venue, so please arrive early if you have special needs for seating.
