New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints close out the regular season with a home game against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Quarterback Drew Brees may be without one of his main weapons, Marques Colston, for the last game of the regular season. Colson had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday. Since the surgery Colston has not participated in any New Orleans Saints practices. This is the second such procedure that has been done on Colston since July. Sean Payton says that the team leading receiver hurt the knee in the game on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Colston leads the New Orleans Saints with 84 catches, 1,023 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Coach Sean Payton says that Colston could play on Sunday and that the injury does not appear to be a significant one. To prepare for the possibility that Colston is not able to play, the New Orleans Saints signed Adrian Arrington off of the practice squad and placed Courtney Roby, a wide receiver / kick return specialist on injured reserve. Roby suffered a concussion on Dec 12th against the St. Louis Rams.
This is the first time since Payton has been coaching the New Orleans Saints that the final game of the season has any meaning. If Falcons lose against the Panthers and the New Orleans Saints defeat the Bucs then the New Orleans Saints are the NFC South champs and could have the number one seed in the playoffs. That however is still a long shot. The Panthers are 2-13 and are a team in disarray. The New Orleans Saints should keep an eye on the Falcons / Panthers game and if it gets out of hand in favor of the Falcons pull the starters. The injury report has a number of players who are hurt in some form or fashion.
Not winning the division would mean the New Orleans Saints would travel and play either the St Louis Rams or the Seattle Seahawks. The New Orleans Saints played both teams in the regular season at the Louisiana Super Dome and defeated both teams.
Still the New Orleans Saints need to focus on the business at hand. The Bucs have an outside chance of making the playoffs. They have to beat the New Orleans Saints and get some help by the Packers and the Giants losing. The Bucs also started the season with a goal of winning 10 games. If the Bucs beat the New Orleans Saints they would get their 10th win. So the Bucs have a reason to play.
This is the 38th time the New Orleans Saints and the Bucs have played one another. The New Orleans Saints lead the series 22 -15. The New Orleans Saints are winners of 9 of the last 17. The New Orleans Saints have not lost to the Bucs since an overtime loss in Dec 2009.
