Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, 08/29/2005 Pre Dawn Video.
On 08/29/2005 I was in downtown New Orleans on assignment for The Weather Channel and I was the freelance videographer “Weather Paparazzi” who stayed in the city to document the storm while everyone else evacuated the area. This footage was shot during the pre dawn hours as hurricane Katrina started to rip apart the city. I shot this on Canal Street and in the French Quarter. The video shows the city losing power as well as the start of the flooding from the heavy rain and damage. I was the only one out in the storm shooting video and getting blasted by the deadly flying debris. This is part of the BNVN Weather Paparazzi stock video collection. ***** What type of video camera were you using? What type of lens hood did you use that kept (for the most part) the drops of rain off the lens? Finally, what did you cover you mic with that allowed the sound but not the “wind against the mic” sound — some kind of waterproof muff?

Wasn’t Katrina considered as the worse hurricane in the history of North America? I know it was pretty bad, but not sure if it was or not.

@username2153 Actually, in hurricane Gustav, you would have got your beat down and then tossed in jail. After Katrina, the police were not messing around. After Gustav, we could not even stand out on the street outside our hotel without the police telling use to get inside or they will give us a place to sleep for the night. Things have changed a lot since Katrina and the cops won’t take any from anyone, including the media.

@LDGOODWIN1968 Thanks, it was pretty insane with nobody around except for a few people on the streets. NOLA was a ghost town that night. Fast forward to Hurricane Gustav, there was hundreds of media and law enforcement on Canal street for Gustav.
