Mara at Disneyland
When Disneyland as a theme park opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California, there were only five lands—Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. New Orleans Square was added in 1965, Critter Country in 1972 and Mickey’s Toontown in 1993. The first time we went there in 1982 with my two sons, who were then aged 10 and 12, we took the day pass with 10 attractions, and it turned out to be quite an exhausting day. This time, with Mara and Simone, we picked out only choice attractions that toddlers would enjoy. Many Disney characters we found throughout the park, greeting visitors, interacting with children, and posing for photos. Some characters have specific areas where they appear wandering as well. We stayed a lot at Main Street, listening to the Town Band, and had lunch at a refreshment parlor where the Dapper Dans barbershop quartet performed. Simone missed many sights because she took an early nap, while Mara kept herself awake until after the parade but slept through the fireworks.
