WHERE:       All forum sessions take place at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., in the French Quarter. The preconference day trip takes participants to three historical houses in St. Francisville, La. The preconference walking tour and additional activities take place in the French Quarter.

HOW:             Registration opens Friday, June 1, and packages start at $100. The optional programs require separate registration and are only open to forum participants. WHY:             Since the 19th century, New Orleans has served as a marketplace for the decorative arts, and the city remains the region’s arts and antiques capital to this day. With the theme “Circa 1812,” the 2012 New Orleans Antiques Forum commemorates the bicentennials of Louisiana statehood and the War of 1812.

This year’s event includes speakers from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hermitage: Home of Andrew Jackson, The American Revolution Center and the Tulane University School of Architecture, among others. The program also features three optional events—a preconference tour of plantation houses in St. Francisville, a preconference walking tour of the historic French Quarter and a Sunday brunch at Antoine’s Restaurant with the speakers and fellow participants.

The Historic New Orleans Collection established the New Orleans Antiques Forum in 2008 to promote the city as a cultural destination and to help local businesses after Hurricane Katrina. The four-day event celebrates its fifth year in 2012 and is expected to once again draw capacity crowds of antiques enthusiasts from more than a dozen states for presentations with decorative arts experts. Participants are also invited to partake in social activities and to visit the city’s numerous antiques shops. First Quarter Crime Report  of 2012 Shows Significant Drop in Murder

(May 15, 2012)-  The first quarter of 2012’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for New Orleans shows the murder rate fell more than 27% from January through March, as compared to the first quarter of 2011.  The number of shootings dropped more than 5%.  And the number of burglaries- including home and auto burglaries- was also down, more than 16%.

While the number of rape cases reported through March of this year was the same as that of last year, there were increases in the number of assaults, thefts, as well as armed and simple robberies.

However, the number of arrests made in robbery cases during the first quarter of this year is up 65% compared to the number of arrests for robberies committed during the same time last year.   

“First and foremost, it’s encouraging to see a substantial drop in the number of homicides at the beginning of this year.  That has been Mayor Landrieu’s and my top concern, and the downward trend in that violent crime, which severely affects countless families and friends of victims, is what we want to see more of,” said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

“In 2011, we outlined new crime-fighting initiatives.  We activated those initiatives in January and we have now developed a good stride.  We will continue to redouble our efforts until we can get all crime statistics down, and I’m confident that with our plans in place, overall crime will be down come December of this year,” Serpas said. 

“These numbers also reflect a public that calls its police department if it’s been a victim of crime.  Victims in New Orleans continue to contact the NOPD at an extremely high rate- about 80%- because they believe our officers will be effective in helping them.  That percentage beats the national average of reported calls by some 20%.   It’s apparent that New Orleans citizens are gaining faith in their police department, and I want to thank them for that.”

French Quarter New Orleans

On Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 4:00pm, the victim, 27 y/o W/M, was walking near Dauphine & Toulouse when he was approached by three unknown black males.  Two suspects attempted to take the victim’s cell phone while the third acted as a look-out.  The victim was able to maintain control of his phone and the suspects fled the scene.

Responding officers apprehended one suspect, who is a juvenile.

The remaining two suspects are described as (1) a black male, 15 – 16 y/o, 5’10”, 150lbs, light complexion, long afro, thin build, wearing a grey tank top and blue jean shorts, and (2) a black male, 15 – 16 y/o, 5’10”, 150 lbs, short hair, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.
