The style of cooking found in New Orleans is a blend of Creole, Cajun, French, Spanish and American Indian influences. The portion that most people seem to be aware of is the Cajun influence. This comes from the Cajun or Acadian culture in Louisiana.

The part that is unique in New Orleans cooking schools is the history of the foods. When you attend a cooking school in New Orleans you will not only learn how to cook but also the story behind the food. Each style and separate dish within a style has a story behind it. This is something that is not found as much in other places.

While you are in New Orleans, there a many other things to do and experience that you can easily spend a week and not see everything.

Is it safe to visit the French Quarter?

With the stories in the headlines that crime is up in the French Quarter, people are questioning whether to stay in the Quarter or not. I live here by choice and love it.  Here is an example of what others are saying.

French Quarter-Bourbon_Street-New_Orleans

French Quarter-Bourbon_Street-New_Orleans

My sister and I are in our early twenties and would like to visit and stay in New Orleans French Quarter, but we are a bit weary from everything we’ve heard. We mostly want to visit one of their many cemeteries, plantations and go on a swamp boat ride.
Would it be safe to stay at a hotel in the french quarter?
I’ve already heard if we go, not to dress nicely and at night not to walk on the sidewalk where the cars are parked (I guess people like to jump out from behind them and mug tourists)
Any other advice for us?

As an end of college road trip this past June, me and 5 other girls (all 21 or 22) took a road trip down to New Orleans. And it was a wonderful trip! But it is crowded, and lots of drunk people around every turn. Here are my tips and advice for young women traveling the French quarter alone:

1.On the weekends on Bourbon street they have mounted police.
2.We stayed at the Holliday Inn French quarter, there was a door man (guard) every day and night.
3.Stay in eye site of each other when walking around, it is very easy to become separated. (in bars go to the bathroom together even, not as important for restaurants)
4.If you feel tired or threatened walk into the nearest hotel lobby and sit down. No one is going to mess with you in a hotel lobby, and as long as you walk in and act like you belong you will not be asked to leave. (I have done this several times)
5.I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe when walking around bourbon street day or night or at the plantations and other tourist sites.
6.Do not carry all your money on you at once.
7.Keep emergency credit card numbers in you room incase your cards are stolen.
8.Use Common Sense
9.The ghost tours are a fun and really show you the history of the area.
10.Ask for advice on places to go from you hotel desk or restaurants or bars, not the stands on the street.
11.Visit Jackson square, especially during the day. Artists are out showing off their works. Also selling them.
12.You can barging for your purchases at the French Market.
13.Enjoy your self!

It is a great city with the culture unlike any other. Go and have fun. Do not worry, about what could happen. Use common sense and things will end up ok.

(Also if you enjoy Piano Bars, Pat O’ Brians has a wonderful one and the best hamburger I have ever had is in a restaurant right across the street from side entrance, I believe it was called Yo Mammas)

Good Morning NOLA!   It ‘s a cloudy day but we should see some sun a little bit later today.  Our high for today is back up in the eighties.  It has definitely been a little warm lately. Our lows overnight are only falling into the sixties.  Watch out for the early morning fog.  Sunday gives us our first significant chance of rain but then only thirty percent.  We are looking at a typical springtime week ahead.  There are lots of activities coming up to keep us plenty busy. All festivals are fixing to swamp us.  March, April and May are when the bulk of them take place.  I will be back on Jackson Square for the weekend at the 1850s House Store.  I just love the energy in the Square and apparently people love my book “If I Were A French Quarter Rat”.  Come out and see me if you are around.  Whatever you decide to do today, enjoy! See y’all in NOLA!

Subrosan Is In The Air Tonight

Subrosan

Hi y’all!  Well tonight is the night!  Subrosan is finally here! April 19th @8:00 pm. For the past several months I have had the pleasure of working with a core group of people to bring you what we hope will be an amazing, eye-opening viewing experience. What a ride!  It seems like yesterday my sister, brother-in-law, my husband and myself were sitting in the driveway talking.  This all started back in July of 2011 when my brother-in-law Dwayne Coots was telling us about a mini-series he wanted to write and produce - Subrosan. Subrosan is a Latin variation meaning “under the rose”.  There was certainly a killer story to be told, but it would also be a vehicle for local actors and actresses like myself to gain experience, get a reel of their work (you wouldn’t believe how hard that is to do, even in Hollywood South) and a chance for us to do something we had all dreamed of doing -make a movie.  In July we said ‘Let’s do it.”  In August, after gathering and auditioning actors and getting equipment, and securing locations etc., we said ” I think we can do this”.  By October and November we were saying “We ARE doing this.”  In basically 9-10 months around our regular lives and crazy schedules, Subrosan Entertainment has put together the first season of the adult thriller Subrosan. So tonight you get to see the culmination of a lot of hard work, determination and good ole Louisiana ingenuity.  I couldn’t be prouder of the talented people who came together to share this experience. I also want to thank you, our family and friends for your support of Subrosan. It is much appreciated. xoxo

We hope you enjoy Episode one of Subrosan!

New Orleans Ladies

Music Video for New Orleans Ladies by Louisiana Leroux. yes this does include 2 clips from Finding Nemo as I was never around the Mississippi river by the time it was needed to be finished.

Also, the miniature pinscher that appears in the video at the point the song goes “sassy style that will drive you crazy” is named Sassy…so I thought she’d be a perfect fit for that part

SUBROSAN IS ALMOST HERE

New Orleans

Hey Y’all! Well, the excitement and anticipation that has been building for months is about to blow, not just in New Orleans but circling the globe. In just two more days the eagerly awaited web series Subrosan’s first episode will be available on you tube. You have been taunted with trailers and teasers, even interviews with the Director, Producers and some of the cast but finally you get a big scrumptious bite of the sinfully delicious Subrosan.
Subrosan will have you dancing on that fine line between myth and history. Have you questioning what is real and what is, well… not. Subrosan is a lot like my beloved New Orleans, some of you will deep down get it, some of you will barely scratch the surface, and others will completely miss the subtle undertones that make Subrosan a must see phenomena. The amazing part is no matter which category you fall in you can’t help but be sucked into this web of secrets and lies tangled with truth that are just a little too close to real life to be comfortable.
Tag along with Ray Roche, a down and almost out private eye, as he gets caught up in this web. From the “end of the world” down in the Parish, through the historic New Orleans French Quarter streets, across Southwest Louisiana, and around the globe, Subrosan has a very long reach. Who do you trust? The college jock? The Priest? The Politician? Subrosan says: Trust No One… Believe Nothing. You decide.
Written and directed by Dwayne Coots this wild ride through shadowy societies intertwined with everyday life showcases loads of Louisiana talent from the dedicated cast of actors to all the behind the scenes players. This is a great example of how people in the Bayou State roll up their collective sleeves and get things done.
Please join us for the premiere episode of Subrosan this Thursday April 19th at 8:00 central time at http://subrosan.com/ .

Good Morning NOLA!  TGIF!  Friday is here.  Are you ready for the weekend? I am certainly looking forward to it.  It is partly cloudy this morning. The sun will be out shortly and the rest of the day will be full of sunshine.  By this afternoon we will reach a high of eighty.  No rain in the forecast today but our chances increase over the weekend.  By Monday of next week we will see a forty percent chance.  The forecast is showing a thirty percent chance of showers for Saturday and Sunday. It is only suppose to be isolated thunder storms but be prepared. I will have the umbrella at the ready but there is plenty of cover in the Quarter. What’s a little rain after all. So don’t let that keep you from coming out to the French Quarter to see me at the 1850′s House Store.  I will be signing my latest book “If I Were A French Quarter Rat” and also  ”I Love You Bigger Than The Sky!”  Whatever you decide to do today, enjoy! See y’all in NOLA!
