I’m thinking of taking a trip to New Orleans and staying in Metairie. I have no idea where that is in relation to the rest of the city, and I will be spending a significant amount of time in the French Quarter. Is it far? Is it easy to drive to the French Quarter, and easy to park there if I rent a car?

You would need a cab or car, its about 6 miles or more depending on where you are in each area. Parking in the french quarter is not easy, there are some pay lots or parking just outside the quarter. If you have the option I would definitely choose to stay in the french quarter so you can walk every where and not have a car. Not much to see as a tourist in Metairie.

Good Morning NOLA! Well we woke to an icy world this morning. Not a common sight in these parts. Rainy and cold, rainy and cold… I know, it sounds like a broken record. One hundred percent chance of rain today and not just rain but rain that freezes when it hits the ground. By lunch time the temps should be above freezing but will drop again tonight. The rain should be moving out by tomorrow leaving us with a cold but partly cloudy day for Saturday and Sunday as well. Watch out for icy roads if you are out and about, especially overpasses. I have no plans of leaving my warm little cocoon here at home. There is a big pot of soup on the stove, as well as homemade cookies and a cake on the counter. My hunny bunnies and I have a date with a new movie and some well loved books. Y’all have a good day and I’ll see you in NOLA!

Don’ t forget to check back tomorrow for your New Orleans weather 10 day forecast.

The video you will see on this web site is horrifying. The crimes committed against law-abiding gun owners are beyond comprehension. The arrogance of anti-gun politicians and government officials and their hate of freedom will churn your stomach. The law is the law, the Constitution is the Constitution. If ONE local mayor or police chief can decide what the Second Amendment means, it opens the door to tyranny—where ANY mayor or police chief can say what the Second Amendment means. You’ve seen this brand of abuse of freedom in the history books—in the pages about days of gun confiscations leading to the terror of Stalin, Mao and Hitler. But you’d never in a million years think it could happen in America. Well, it can and it did. And it will happen again unless we take action today. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, Police Superintendent P. Eddie Compass unleashed a wave of confiscations with these chilling words: “No one will be able to be armed. We will take all weapons. Only law enforcement will be allowed to have guns.” Thousands of firearms were then confiscated from law-abiding gun owners. The police gave no paperwork or receipts for those guns. They just stormed in and seized them. With your help we’re going to make the first time in New Orleans the LAST time in America. Thank you! Now, one year later, these crimes against gun owners have snowballed into a far greater threat to our freedoms. Even though NRA secured a court order demanding their immediate and unconditional …

i need to get a brief history on the name "French Quarter" and the importance of bourbon street.
i tried some websites but the history is a mess.
links provided is good enough thanks.

The French Quarter, also known as Vieux Carré, is the oldest and most famous neighborhood in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. When La Nouvelle Orléans ("New Orleans" in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city was originally centered on the French Quarter, or the Vieux Carré ("Old Square" in French) as it was known then. While the area is still referred to as the Vieux Carré by some, it is more commonly known as the French Quarter today, or simply "The Quarter." The district as a whole is a National Historic Landmark, and contains numerous individual historic buildings. It was affected relatively lightly by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as compared to other areas of the city and the region as a whole. The Quarter is subdistrict of the French Quarter/CBD Area.

Good Morning NOLA! It’s a mild and muggy day today. We have a sixty percent chance of scattered showers today with the bulk of it coming later this evening. Tomorrow is looking like eighty percent chance of rain, so I’m not too sure I’m up for parade watching but you guys go right ahead. After the rain passes through we will have some cooler temps. Sunday night’s low is back in the forties. We will have some clear to partly cloudy skies with highs in the sixities to take us though Mardi Gras day though. Sounds pretty close to perfect for some bead catching weather. I will be pretending to “Mardi Gras” on Sunday on the set of the new Nicholas Cage movie being shot here in town. It should be a lot of fun. I am also looking forward to a couple of days on the new season of Memphis Beat at the end of next week. Mark your claendars for a week from Saturday. I will be signing my new book “If I Were A French Quarter Rat” on Jackson Square at the 1850′s House store. I hope to see you there. Have a great weekend. See you in NOLA!

WHY: The Historic New Orleans Collection will once again feature “Historic Haunts: The Myths and Legends of the Vieux Carré” throughout the month of October. Introduced in 2009, the popular Halloween-inspired tour of The Collection’s Louisiana History Galleries explores the truth behind New Orleans’s more seedy legends and the French Quarter’s most infamous characters. The tour discusses the documented history and how it may have inspired the legends, allowing attendees to decide on their own what is myth and what is grisly truth. Including the likes of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, rumored sadistic slave-owner Madame Lalaurie and pirate Jean Laffite, the tour examines 10 “haunted” locations in the Quarter using research conducted at the Williams Research Center.

Tours are available daily Tuesday–Sunday, October 1–30, at 2 p.m. On Halloween Sunday, October 31, three tours will be offered, at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. “Historic Haunts” is intended for an adult audience. Admission is $5, free for THNOC members.
