Injuries Play A Role In New Orleans Saints Wildcard Game

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints placed running backs Chris Ivory the team’s leading rusher and Pierre Thomas, a starter at the beginning of the season were placed on injured reserve ending their season, and added Joique Bell and Deshawn Wynn to the roster to beef up the running back corps. The New Orleans Saints running backs have been plagued by injuries this season. Pierre Thomas has been injured on and off and up until today he was scheduled to play.

Injuries Play A Role In New Orleans Saints Wildcard Game

Injuries Play A Role In New Orleans Saints Wildcard Game

Chris Ivory was injured during the Atlanta game after carring most of the season. Prior to the beginning of the season the New Orleans Saints lost Lynell Hamilton and PJ Hill to injuries for the entire year. Reggie Bush seems to be in good shape but is not a between the tackles runner. Bell had been signed by the Buffalo Bills but was released and then spent time with the Indianapolis Colts. Deshawn Wynn has been with the New Orleans Saints earlier in the season but was cut in October. Ivory led the New Orleans Saints prior to getting hurt with 716 yards on 137 carries and 5 touchdowns. Ivory was injured in the 23-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs. The loss of Ivory and Thomas will create a hole in the New Orleans Saints running attack. So at this point the veterans that are on the team and are 100% are Reggie Bush (150 yards on 36 carries) and Julius Jones (193 yards on 48 carries) are the only backs that have been with the New Orleans Saints all season.

The New Orleans Saints did receive some good news however on the wide receiver front. Standout wide receiver Marques Colston was able to return to practice on a full time basis. This means that the receiver corps will have a full complement of receivers to carry the load. This is important since TE Jimmy Graham did not practice at all and TE Jeremy Shockey, and TE David Thomas limited practice are uncertain in status for the game in Seattle on Saturday. Others on the injury report are S Malcolm Jenkins, DT Anthony Hargrove and LB Danny Clark.

New Orleans Saints Play The Seattle Seahawks In The Playoffs

New Orleans Saints

Ok so here we are in the playoffs. There were those who did not think this would happen based on play early in the season, injuries and the difficulty of defending a Super Bowl Championship. Having said all of that the New Orleans Saints are in the playoffs and travel to play the Seattle Seahawks in the opening round of the playoffs.

So now the question is can the New Orleans Saints FINALLY win a road playoff game? I guess the Super Bowl does not count but I digress. Last year the question was “How can the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl after losing the final three games of the season? No one has ever done that!” So much for that rumor being a valid fact!

New Orleans Saints Play The Seattle Seahawks In The Playoffs

New Orleans Saints Play The Seattle Seahawks In The Playoffs

So what will it take for the New Orleans Saints to beat the Seahawks in their house? Protecting the ball and forcing turnovers by the Seahawks would be the first thing that comes to mind. This will help neutralize the crowd and its famous ability to cause false starts. It will also rattle a team that is coming into the playoffs with a losing record. In their prior road playoff loses, the New Orleans Saints lost the turnover battle. Staying on the positive side of turnovers will be important.
On offense, having the ability to run the ball is important. Even though the New Orleans Saints will be able to take advantage of the Seahawks pass defense, ball control will help take the crowd out of the game. Running the ball at least 30 time will wear the Seahawks down and soften them up so that the high powered New Orleans Saints passing game can put the stake in the heart of the Seahawks.

When the defense is on the field, the New Orleans Saints should be at an advantage. There is a very good chance that Whitehurst will be starting for the Seahawks. This will allow the New Orleans Saints defense to have a huge advantage. He tends to want to run the ball when his receivers are covered. That means if the New Orleans Saints defense can contain Whitehurst, they will be able to shut the Seahawks down.

This is a game the New Orleans Saints should win. The Seahawks defense is not going to be able to contain the New Orleans Saints offense. The Seattle offense is not going to be about to solve the aggressive play of the New Orleans Saints defense. Prediction New Orleans Saints 41 Seahawks 17.

New Orleans Saints Game Day Update 01 02 2011

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints close out the regular season with a home game against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Quarterback Drew Brees may be without one of his main weapons, Marques Colston, for the last game of the regular season. Colson had arthroscopic surgery on his right  knee Tuesday. Since the surgery Colston has not participated in any New Orleans Saints practices. This is the second such procedure that has been done on Colston since July. Sean Payton says that the team leading receiver hurt the knee in the game on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Colston leads the New Orleans Saints with 84 catches, 1,023 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Coach Sean Payton says that Colston could play on Sunday and that the injury does not appear to be a significant one. To prepare for the possibility that Colston is not able to play, the New Orleans Saints signed Adrian Arrington off of the practice squad and placed Courtney Roby, a wide receiver / kick return specialist on injured reserve. Roby suffered a concussion on Dec 12th against the St. Louis Rams.

New Orleans Saints Playoff Run Week 17

New Orleans Saints Playoff Run Week 17

This is the first time since Payton has been coaching the New Orleans Saints that the final game of the season has any meaning. If Falcons lose against the Panthers and the New Orleans Saints defeat the Bucs then the New Orleans Saints are the NFC South champs and could have the number one seed in the playoffs. That however is still a long shot. The Panthers are 2-13 and are a team in disarray. The New Orleans Saints should keep an eye on the Falcons / Panthers game and if it gets out of hand in favor of the Falcons pull the starters. The injury report has a number of players who are hurt in some form or fashion.

Not winning the division would mean the New Orleans Saints would travel and play either the St Louis Rams or the Seattle Seahawks. The New Orleans Saints played both teams in the regular season at the Louisiana Super Dome and defeated both teams.

Still the New Orleans Saints need to focus on the business at hand. The Bucs have an outside chance of making the playoffs. They have to beat the New Orleans Saints and get some help by the Packers and the Giants losing. The Bucs also started the season with a goal of winning 10 games. If the Bucs beat the New Orleans Saints they would get their 10th win. So the Bucs have a reason to play.

This is the 38th time the New Orleans Saints and the Bucs have played one another. The New Orleans Saints lead the series 22 -15. The New Orleans Saints are winners of 9 of the last 17. The New Orleans Saints have not lost to the Bucs since an overtime loss in Dec 2009.

New Orleans Saints vs Indianapolis Colts 31-17 Highlights – 44 Super Bowl 2010

Super Bowl XLIV was the 44th Super Bowl game that was played on February 7, 2010, pitting the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Indianapolis Colts against the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New Orleans Saints. The New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 31-17, earning their first Super Bowl win. The venue was the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, and the game’s kickoff took place at 6:28 p.m. EST (23:28 UTC) on February 7, 2010, the latest calendar date for a Super Bowl yet. The game features the Saints’ first Super Bowl appearance since their founding in 1967, while it is the fourth time a Colts franchise team has appeared, since their founding in 1953 as the Baltimore Colts. In their three previous Super Bowl appearances, all also in Miami, the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts have lost once in 1969 and won twice in 1971 and 2007.

The Saints entered the game with a 13-3 record for the 2009 regular season, compared to the Colts’ 14-2 record. In the playoff games, both teams had a 1st round bye. The Colts entered the Super Bowl off of 203 and 3017 victories, while the Saints advanced with scores of 4514 and 3128 (in overtime), defeating last year’s runners up the Arizona Cardinals in their first game. The Pittsburgh Steelers, as defending champions, failed to make the playoffs based on tiebreakers. It was the first time since Super Bowl XXVIII (16 years previously) that both number one seeds have reached the Super Bowl. The Saints’ head coach was Sean Payton, having joined from the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, while his opposing head coach Jim Caldwell was appointed the Colts head coach in 2009 having joined them in 2002 as assistant head coach.

Who Dat Do Dat The New Orleans Saints Are In The Playoffs

The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints took advantage of an opportunity to control their destiny on Monday Night Football by defeating the Atlanta Falcons. The New Orleans Saints clinched a spot in the post season tournament with a 17 to 14 win over the Falcons.

New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints

Atlanta has dominated in most games this season and gave the high powered New Orleans Saints offense trouble keeping them below their season scoring average. Still this loss could turn the playoff picture on its head depending on the results of next weekend’s games.

Should both the Falcons lose and the New Orleans Saints win next weekend the New Orleans Saints become the Number One seed in the NFC and make the New Orleans Saints the NFC South champs. This is however a long shot. The Falcons play the Panthers who are the worst team in the NFL. Still who would have thought the Chiefs would make it into the playoffs as a result of a Bengals win over the Chargers.

Still the New Orleans Saints are in the playoffs again and will at least have an opportunity to continue their defense of the NFL Championship. They showed that they can win in a hostile environment. The New Orleans Saints overcame mistakes, some questionable calls and the Falcon home crowd. This is a game that will prepare them for a playoffs filled with away games should they end up the fifth seed.

New Orleans Saints Game Day Update 12 19 2010

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints play the Baltimore Ravens in an inter-conference matchup that has playoff implications. Both the New Orleans Saints and the Ravens are in the playoff hunt for their respective conferences and divisions. The New Orleans Saints are at 10 -3 and are second in the NFC South and lead the teams in the wildcard hunt. The New Orleans Saints are currently riding a six game winning streak. They still need to keep their winning ways to insure a playoff spot. If they lose two of their last 3 games they could be watching the playoffs from home. The New Orleans Saints trail the Falcons by one game as a result of their loss against the Falcons in week 3 of this season. The Falcons would have to lose their final 3 games for the New Orleans Saints to be able to lose 2 of their last 3 and not be out of the playoffs. The best way for the New Orleans Saints to make sure and have a playoff spot is to win out.

New Orleans Saints Game Day Update 12 19 2010

New Orleans Saints Game Day Update 12 19 2010

Still if the New Orleans Saints win today against the Ravens and the Bucs lose against the Lions and either the Giants lose against the Eagles or the Packers lose against the Patriots or the Bears lose against the Vikings the New Orleans are in the playoffs.
The Ravens have an easier route. The Ravens can clinch a spot with these scenarios:
1. A win today and a Colts loss or tie and a Charger loss or tie OR
2. A win today and a Colts loss or tie and a Dolphins loss or tie and a Chiefs loss or tie OR
3. A tie today and a Dolphins loss or tie and a Charger loss and a Colts loss
The New Orleans Saints offense presents problems for most of the league’s defenses. The New Orleans Saints have so many weapons that when they are in sync they are almost impossible for defenses to match up against. The Ravens defense has started to show its age but is still a formidable defense. They looked their age against the Texans at the end of the game last Monday night. A great play during overtime saved the Ravens from an embarrassing loss. The Ravens defense gave up a 28 – 7 lead to allow the game to go into overtime.
The Ravens will have to rely on their running game against the New Orleans Saints in order to allow their defense to rest and keep the New Orleans Saints offense off of the field. The New Orleans Saints Defense is ranked 5th against the pass and 17th against the run. This is why running the ball makes more sense for the Ravens.
Here is the injury report for both teams:

Being the Defensive Player of the week is an honor, winning that honor twice in a three week span. That is something that usually only happens in a video game.

New Orleans Saints DB Malcolm Jenkins Def Player Of The Week

New Orleans Saints DB Malcolm Jenkins Def Player Of The Week

Safety Malcolm Jenkins was a big part of the New Orleans Saints victory over the St. Louis Rams. Jenkins intercepted two Sam Bradford passes and returned one for a touchdown in the New Orleans Saints 31 – 13 victory Sunday December 12th at the Louisiana Superdome.
Jenkins had 105 interception return yards which ranks 2nd in team history behind Tommy Myers. Myers had 151 yards on 3 interceptions in 1978. Jenkins stats for the season through week 14 are 75 tackles of which 50 are solo tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and ten pass defenses. Jenkins is the first New Orleans Saint player to win Player Of The Week honors twice in one season since Sammy Knight did it in 2001.
