The Train They Call The City of New Orleans

We have all heard one version or another of the song “The City of New Orleans”.  The song performed by the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Willie Nelson and John Denver was actually written by Steve Goodman about riding the rails in an observation car.

I knew the song but had never ridden a train, much less a renowned Pullman, so you can imagine my excitement when I had the opportunity to do just that.  My husband was invited to a business function being held on the railcar, and spouses were included.  Think Jim West and Artemis Gordon’s ‘rail-ride” on Wild, Wild West, but better.

Built in 1927 by the illustrious Pullman Company, The City of New Orleans parlor observation railcar is used primarily for charitable auctions and business-related meetings supporting New Orleans-area commerce and business development.  Acquired by Gregory Dodd and relocated to New Orleans in 1998, the railcar had had a long and colorful life that spanned states and rail companies.  In 2002 the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad acquired and renamed it The City of New Orleans.

The railcar has raised over $800,000.00 for local charities since its renovation in 2002.  Accommodations include seating for up to 20 persons and full service catering capabilities for both food and beverage. Our group included 40 people so they hitched on a second car, The Louisiana.

Plush club chairs, beautiful brass appointments, wood wainscoting and marble ledges were only topped by the food-laden waiter and bartender at our beck and call. The 3 hour route took us from the rail yard in Metairie, to the top of the Huey P. Long Bridge, all along the river to the French Quarter and even slightly past the curve of the river beyond the French Market which is a restricted area.  The view looking back on the city is amazing!

Take an unforgettable ride on The Train They Call the City of New Orleans.  All Aboard!!

Doreen – The Clarinet Queen

Where can you go to catch a world class musical performance with plenty of room to dance? The 700 block of Royal Street is where it’s happening.  You’ve got Rouses’ (the old A&P) grocery, a regular stop for French Quarter visitors and locals alike. Across the street is Forever New Orleans, and Alex Beard recently opened an art gallery a few doors down on the corner of Royal and Pirates Alley (you can actually watch him paint in the window sometime, very cool).   Gallery 713, a local favorite, is opposite him.   But the crowd in the street is gathered around a group of local street musicians known to frequent this block.   They are here to see the Queen.

Doreen and her husband Lawrence Ketchens have been international ambassadors for New Orleans music and culture on radio and televisions around the world. While they are available for weddings and special events, Doreen and her band of jazz musicians have been bringing their brand of music to the Crescent City streets for twenty years or so.  A fixture on this stretch of Royal they will have even the most rhythm challenged tapping their feet and moving to the beat.

As Doreen says in one of her songs “I’m the Queen of the clarinet, been around the world ain’t heard better yet” and I say “Amen!”  The group has several CD’s available for purchase.  You can visit their website:  www.doreensjazz.com

These show stealers will capture your hearts with just one stanza of their rendition of “Little Liza Jane” as they did mine.   It is obvious these amazing performers play for the absolute love of it because their heart and soul are in every note.

Stop by and hang out with Doreen, Lawrence and the crew next time you find yourself on Royal Street.   Hey y’all, don’t forget to leave a little something in the bucket!

New Orleans Saints- BACK IN BLACK and GOLD

louisianasuperdome

The Saints came marching in all right, into the Superdome and right back out with a 45-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.  Dominating on both ends of the field the Saints showed exactly why they are the number one seed in the NFC. Who Dat!

Next weekend brings us face to face with the number two seed, the Minnesota Vikings.  The only team standing between us and a trip to the Super Bowl.  I love you Brett, but you’re going down!

Faith is not believing that the Saints can make it to the Super Bowl; it is knowing that they will.  So wave those “We Believe “signs like you mean it Who Dat fans!  The boys in black and gold sure look like Super Bowl champs to me!

Saints Be Praised – We are in the Playoffs!

No paper bags in sight these days!  You know what I’m talking about.  Loud and proud, the Who Dat Nation is singing their favorite song. That’s right, baby, “When the Saints Come Marching In.”!  This enthusiastic fervor for the New Orleans home team has brought such crowds to Crescent City and French Quarter it feels like Mardi Gras has come early.  Things are really cooking in the Big Easy.  Bless you Boys!

When the New Orleans Saints come marching into the Superdome on Saturday they bring with them the hopes and prayers of Saint fans everywhere.  Drew and crew have done an awesome job this season taking our team to the number one slot in the NFC.  Boasting a 13-0 record before the last three losses the Saints were on fire.

Looking to fan that flame, our boys take on the Arizona Cardinals in our first game of the playoffs.  Who Dat say they gonna beat them Saints? I never had cardinal gumbo, but for us Louisiana Saints fans a bird is a bird right?    Somebody grab the pot!  Who Dat!
