Katrina defies magazine and reaches its 40th anniversary
Metairie, LA (PRWEB) December 7, 2005
From a temporary office near Baton Rouge and its staff scattered throughout the state, New Orleans Magazine reaches its 40th anniversary with its first issue post-Katrina, and now the Renaissance. “The question is what should be done to rebuild New Orleans. It can be found in Barnes and Noble stores nationally and is available in digital format from the website, www.NewOrleansMagazine.com.
history of New Orleans-based magazine picked up the pieces after the devastation of Katrina and back to business characterizes what is happening in the region. Publisher William Metcalf, Jr. notes that “The struggles and adversity faced by our employees, their families and all our friends in the community are simply breathtaking. Yet it was a decision on the granular part of our employees back to work and be part of the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. “
Staffers left work Friday, August 26th to make plans for the weekend – football games, parties, and back to back to school shopping. Forty-eight hours later, they were literally scattered to the four winds, with Katrina bearing down on New Orleans.
The next week was just spent getting bearings. Staff members were everywhere – Hawaii, California, Dallas, Baton Rouge – and some still in New Orleans awaiting evacuation. Communication was virtually impossible that the first week, but eventually all employees were safe, although many have suffered significant losses.
Kelley Faucheux, vice president-sales, received a emergency entry pass to enter New Orleans seven days after Katrina. His first-hand report from the devastation of the city was cold, but his initial report of the office was encouraging. After climbing up 18 flights in the dark and 98 degrees of heat, she found water damage and “a new skylight” in the editing room, but at least the office had not blown .
CEO Todd Matherne led a team to relocate servers, computers and files in an office near Baton Rouge won. While the office was reduced to a small room and some cabins, New Orleans Magazine had found temporary refuge.
Editor Errol Laborde
was determined to make the November issue special emphasis on the reconstruction effort. Unfortunately, his full-time staff editor at number two. With the future so uncertain, many staff had been released. It was submitted by e-mail telling how he intended to find a damp and frizzy September New Orleans Magazine in the mailbox of the subscriber.
personnel used in a difficult environment. All have left their homes with only a few pieces of clothing. temporary accommodation has disturbed the better. Everyone was concerned for friends and family who lost everything to Hurricane Katrina. Many had to make decisions about children and schools.
Almost every house member of staff was damaged – meaning exhausting trips to a bizarre New Orleans. Take ruined business, meet insurance adjusters, and try to find a contractor. And no place to eat after 03 hours. New Orleans was not the city that care forgot.
these strange circumstances, the November issue of New Orleans Magazine was born – a bit late but healthy. New Orleans Magazine as the city whose name it bears, has survived tough times, but in its 40th year is determined to become even stronger.

Good Morning NOLA!
I’ll see you in NOLA! we are waking up to some clouds and a little breeze. The forecast says partly cloudy and breezy but that won’t keep parade goers indoors. Our high temp today is at the eighty degree mark and low for tonight is only sixty-nine. So I know with the spring like weather the crowds in French Quarter and on the street will be massive as well as Metairie and all along the other parade routes through out the city and across the river. Bring your sunscreen and re-apply. It is these kinds of days that you don’t realize you are getting burnt before it is too late. Believe me you will pay for it later. Especially watch the babies and young children. I will be on Orleans Avenue today in the french Quarter with friends. The Barkus parade rolls at two o’clock today right out front. I haven’t been able to make this one yet so it will be a special treat. Have a wonderful Sunday however you choose to spend it.

Good Morning Nola! I am so glad our weekend is finally here. I just spent two fun but long days on the set of Looper, a futuristic movie starring Bruce Willis set in the New Orleans CBD. Iam ready to get back out in the Quarter and enjoy some Mardi gras festivities. It’s partly cloudy this morning with our high of seventy-five. There is only a twenty percent chance of rain today and tomorrow. Monday will bring with it a fifty-fifty chance so I would keep the umbrella handy. This mild weather sure has the people out and about in the French Quarter in droves. Parades and normal Quarter fun is on my agenda for the weekend. There is a strong possibility that I will be catching flying Mardi Gras beads in the near future also. Well my running buddies are waiting so I need to wrap this up so I can get out there. Y’all have fun and I hope you catch lots of beads too.
I’ll see you in NOLA!

Good Morning NOLA! TGIF! We are starting off our day with some clouds but the sunwill be out a little later today. Spring like highs are still around with our’s for today being seventy five. The low tonight will drop into the fifties again so we are looking around fifty -four degrees. Another day for me on the set of Looper in the CBD. It was actually quite nice walking over to set from the French Quarter in the morning. It was warm yesterday but the breeze saved the day. Looks like we will have more of the same today with the winds five to ten miles per hour according to the forecast. This is suppose to take place in the fall or winter so I was slightly overdressed for the forecast. Great weather up ahead for the weekend. Parade going shuld not be a problem. There is a possiblity of some showers on Monday but the weekend looks clear. Have a fabulous Friday!
I’ll see you in NOLA!

Where is a good place to find chicken and dumplings in the French Quarter’s or surrounding areas?
I’m not a tourist or anything but I have never really ate in the French Quarter’s and my husband and I will be attending a play this month at the Convention Center and we want somewhere nice to eat out. I have never had chicken and dumplings but always wanted to try it.
I am looking for a soul food restaurant but on the classy side. Please provide a link to the place or phone number. Thanks in advance.

The Battle of New Orleans – Lego Video
I cannot take any credit for this absolutely awesome video – all credit goes to the original creators and the late, great Johnny Horton for his stunning performance of “The Battle of New Orleans”. The song takes a cheeky approach to Andrew Jackson’s now famous battle during the War of 1812 – the battle took place AFTER the war officially ended, however by the time new of the war’s official end reached the United States most people heard of Jackson’s victory, and then just assumed that he was the reason for the victory – which made him a national hero. Lyrics: In 1814 we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans. [Chorus:] We fired our guns and the British kept a’comin. There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin’ on Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We looked down the river and we see’d the British come. And there must have been a hundred of’em beatin’ on the drum. They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring. We stood by our cotton bales and didn’t say a thing. [Chorus] Old Hickory said we could take ‘em by surprise If we didn’t fire our muskets ’til we looked ‘em in the eye We held our fire ’til we see’d their faces well. Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave ‘em … well [Chorus] Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles …

Good Morning NOLA! Happy Thursday! You made through hump day the weekend is looming closer. It’s a little cloudy again this morning with sun as the day progresses. Our high today is back in the upper seventies with a chance for some showers later this evening. They should be moving through rather quickly and shuld not impact the parades running this weekend. We will still see the temps dropping slightly making our evenings pleasant. I took a stroll with a friend to dinner last night at Maximo’s. There was just a light coolness on the air. We can count our blessings fo rthis springlike weather we have been experiencing. What a treat! I am looking forward to the weekend and the rest of the Mardi Gras season. Here’s hoping you have a simply terrific Thursday. I am on the set of Looper again for the next two days but don’t worry, I’ll be around.
I’ll see you in NOLA!

Good Morning NOLA! I’m thinking it’s going to be another great day. No rain in the forecast for today. Just a little cloudy with our high near the eighty degree mark. There will be a few isolated thunderstorms in the evening on Thursday but should move out before the weekend parades get here. Our overnight lows will be in the sixties. All in all we really can’t complain. Next week may see us back in the sixties for our daytime temps which is a little more like our usual for this time of year. What a great Mardi Gras outlook. I am really enjoying my time by getting out and about and soaking up some vitiamin D. Even the evenings are wonderful so make the most of this weather. I had a nice evening with friends over at the House Of Blues listening to My Graveyard Jaw and watching a screening of The Cure for the Crash, a feature film by Brian Paul. You should check both out if you have a chance. So get up, get moving and I’ll see you in NOLA!
